Osman Varol has over 30 years extensive world-wide experience having worked for over 20 oil companies in more than 50 countries on sediments ranging from Jurassic to Tertiary age.

He completed his BSc [Geology] and MSc [Micropaleontology] in the University of Istanbul, Turkey. He was awarded a PhD degree [Nannofossils] by the University College London.

Maintenance of his position at the forefront of recent developments in the industrial application of nannofossil analyses has been ensured through his work with numerous oil companies, links with academia, presentations and publications in peer-reviewed journals. In more recent years, with the development of horizontal drilling techniques, he has applied nannofossils extensively to biosteer drilling operations at the wellsite. Osman was commissioned to provide this new technology to some of the first North Sea wells during the late 1980's. He has additional experience in the use of nannofossils to determine casing points, at the wellsite, necessitated by advances in the drilling of high pressure wells in various basins around the world.

Research is a necessary activity to maintain continuous improvement and high-level performance, for which Osman has ensured through an active research program. The results of his research have contributed valuable and industry-recognised new zonation schemes and advances in the taxonomy of calcareous nannofossils.

Osman was a member of The Stratigraphy Committee of the Geological Society of London between 1994 and 1997. He was also an external examiner for M.Sc. students at University College London between 1997 and 1999. He has occasionally been an external PhD examiner for University of London.

During his career, Osman has provided numerous training courses, from beginner to advance level, for oil company personal at numerous world-wide centres . Since moving to the USA in 2010, Osman has continued to provide Early Cretaceous to Recent nannofossil training at an advanced level to various oil companies that include Statoil, Chevron, Shell and Exxon.
