Coccolithus pelagicus (Wallich, 1877) Schiller, 1930 azorinus Parente & Cachão in Parente et al., 2004
Large (>14.0µm) species of Coccolithus having a transverse bar in the central area.
Coccolithus azorinus is distinguished from Coccolithus miopelagicus Bukry (1971) by having a transverse bar, whereas the latter lack any structure in the central area. These species do not co-occur. The highest stratigraphic occurrence of Coccolithus miopelagicus is at 11.04Ma, whilst Coccolithus azorinus is younger than 0.29Ma.
Coccolithus azorinus differs from Coccolithus crassipons Bouché (1962) by being larger than 14.0µm. The size of the latter is less than 10.0µm.
