Stradner (1961) designated the holotype, but the designation unfortunately encompasses all five to six illustrated specimens. As a result, the name is invalid under ICN Article 9.1, which requires that a holotype consist of a single specimen or a single illustration.
Species of Ceratolithoides are characterised by a prominent apical cone bearing multiple rows of longitudinal beaded elements. The apical cone is substantially taller than the horns, constituting the principal vertical component of the structure.
