Synonyms

Geminilithella okayi Varol, 1989 

This species is not validly published because the generic name Geminilithella Backman, 1980 is itself not validly published. Backman (1980) designated Cyclococcolithus rotula as the type species of Geminilithella. However, Cyclococcolithus rotula was based on Tremalithus rotula Kamptner, 1948, which was not validly published because Tremalithus was not validly published; consequently, Tremalithus rotula also fails valid publication under ICN Art. 35.1. In Kamptner (1956c), rotula was merely assigned to Cyclococcolithus in a tabulated list of “definitive genera”; the combination Cyclococcolithus rotula was not formally established there. Because the designated type species of Geminilithella was not validly published, Geminilithella Backman, 1980 is likewise not validly published. Consequently, Geminilithella okayi Varol, 1989 is not validly published under Art. 35.1.
