Diploteichus alternisurgens Varol, in prep.
Diploteichus species are characterised by two parallel transverse bars, each having one end raised at its junction with the surrounding wall, but on opposite sides of the central area. A narrow, indistinct median line is visible under phase-contrast illumination. Under crossed polars, the structure appears as a narrow cross.
From Latin alternus, alternate and surgens, rising, referring to the alternately raised ends of the two transverse bars.
