Watznaueria vega Varol, in prep.
Watznaueria vaga is characterised by a vaguely defined central area that grades gradually into the surrounding shield, without a distinct boundary visible under light microscopy.
From the Latin vaga, indistinct or wandering, referring to the diffuse central area that grades into the surrounding shields.
Small to medium-sized Watznaueria (3.0–7.0 μm), with a distal shield wider than the proximal shield.
In plan view under cross-polarised light, the shields display white interference colours that diminish towards the periphery, where only the distal shield is present. The narrow, elongate central area shows dimmer interference colours relative to the shields. Watznaueria vaga displays inclined extinction lines and length-fast (–) elongation.
